Papaya is a fruit tree in a number of tropical regions, including Hawaii, Latin America, the West Indies, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand, and the Philippines. Edible portions of the plant include the fruit and leaves, both of which contain variable amounts of carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, minerals aminoacids, proteolytic enzymes including papain, and other potentially bioactive substances.

Functions:
Papaya fruit and juice have been used to support digestion as it can contain papain an enzyme which metabolizes proteins. It is also considered to be a source of of antioxidants such as carotenoids.
