Sage was used in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman medicines as well as in India.

The medicinally used part is the dried leaf from which sage oil is obtained.
Sage leaf oil is rich in thujone. Further constituents include camphor, monoterpene glycosides, flavonoid and phenolic glycosides.

Sage has been used to support digestion and regulation of sweating. Sage leaf has also been reported as a source of antioxidants.
